Diagnosis of Mycobacterium microti infections among humans by using novel genetic markers.

As a result of DNA typing of Mycobacterium microti isolates from animals in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands, we diagnosed four human M. microti infections. These are the first M. microti infections among humans to be reported. Three of the patients were immunocompromised and suffered from generalized forms of tuberculosis. The fourth patient was a 34-year-old immunocompetent male with a ...

Mycobacterium microti infection (vole tuberculosis) in wild rodent populations.

Mycobacterium microti (vole tuberculosis) infections in small wild mammals were first described more than 60 years ago in several populations in Great Britain. Few studies of vole tuberculosis have been undertaken since then, and little is known about the relationship between M. microti isolates originating from different populations or at different times or of the prevalence of this infection ...

Mycobacterium microti: more widespread than previously thought.

Mycobacterium microti typically causes disease in voles, wood mice, and shrews (6). Only rarely has this bacterium been isolated from other animals, among which are a llama, cats, pigs, a rock hyrax, and a ferret (2, 4, 5). Recently, M. microti isolates from different sources were characterized by using novel genetic markers (5), and this study for the first time disclosed four cases of M. micr...

Two cases of Mycobacterium microti-induced culture-negative tuberculosis.

We present descriptions of two human Mycobacterium microti infections: one of a patient with pulmonary disease and one of a patient with osteomyelitis of the hip. Both patients had acid-fast bacilli and a positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex PCR from clinical specimens, but mycobacterial cultures remained negative. The microbiological diagnosis was established by molecular methods.

Mycobacterial disease in cats in Great Britain: I. Culture results, geographical distribution and clinical presentation of 339 cases.

This study investigated 339 cases of feline mycobacterial disease from cats with cutaneous lesions or masses found at exploratory laparotomy. Tissue samples were submitted to the Veterinary Laboratories Agency for mycobacterial culture over a 4-year period to December 2008. The study assessed which species of culturable mycobacteria were involved, where the cats lived, and their clinical presen...
